Design systems
Client - Self initiated | Outputs: Design systems & email
Brief
To create a design system for Kat Maconie’s emails to keep communication consistent and time efficient.
Process
Background
When I used to work at Kat Maconie, every time I started a new email I was creating it from scratch. As there weren’t any systems in place, I would have to re-create elements each time. I wanted to create a system where everything was there, including different versions of components to help save time and to make emails consistent.
Research
I started off by viewing other design systems out there like Shopify, Google, Adobe, etc to help understand what goes into a design systems. I also had experience working and contributing to the existing design systems at Sky which has helped in this process. I then audited current and old emails to evaluate the reusable components needed, I also grouped them together into categories and saw many discrepancies for example the buttons were not consistent. I then started to edit down what was essential for example only using the current campaign’s colour palette, as there were many examples that went off the colour palettes for each campaigns.
Reflection
A challenge that I faced was not having a team with me and designing it myself. However I feel that I’ve learned a lot and built a good foundation in design systems. The system that I created is at a good place to continue building on and evolve. If I was to do the project again with more time I would also include a system for the website.
Outcome
Using the design systems and also the guides I created I’ve created a mockup of the email and a prototype.
